The coast road which took us to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki is reported to be in the top 10 coastal drives. There are lots of viewing spots from which you see the Tasman sea and its wonderful beaches, sme with craggy rocks some with forests merging onto the sand. There are a lot of undercurrents on the west coast and swimming can be dangerous so these beaches are usually deserted. The road meandered up and down, hugging the coast line, the blue skies were cloudless and it was a real temptation to don a costume and go for a swim!
We found the pancake rocks fascinating. They are 30 million year old limestone formations that are layered like stacks of pancakes. At high tide when the waves swirl around the rocks the natural blowhole is at its best.
Our accommodation in this spot is a wooden cabin deep in the forest, I'll let you know how the night goes and whether I can cope with the insects - I've already provided dinner for at least 3!
When I booked we were also given a menu from a lady who cooks and then delivers the meal to the door. I know that in 2 days time I get my first state pension payment but I didn't think I was ready for meals on wheels. We opted for a lamb curry which was delicious.
